Bhutan - Festivals in the Fall - Thimphu and Wangdue Tsechu - October 7 To 11, 2008 [10 Days]

Bhutan - Festivals in the Fall

Even before you have landed in the remote kingdom of Bhutan you know you are arriving at a very special destination. As you peek out the window of the plane you find yourself surrounded by the majestic mountains of the Himalayas, descending into a valley, that even from the air, has the mystical quality of existing in an era that the rest of the world has long forgotten. Each month a special festival in a different location heralds a new season or marks a significant occasion with music, dance and social gaiety. This is part of the magical charm of Bhutan. Our tour will take you to the remote Eastern part of the country and will include the highlights of Western and Central Bhutan as well.

Taktsang, meaning “Tiger’s nest,” is built around a cave in which Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhawa) mediated, clings seemingly impossible to a cliff of rock at 3,000 feet above the valley floor. For the local people it is a place of pilgrimage, but for a tourist, a hike up to the viewpoint opposite the monastery is exhausting, thrilling and mystical. The legend has it that Guru Rimpoche is said to have flown to the site of the monastery on the back of a tigress from Tibet and meditated in the cave there for three months. Although the main building of the temple was destroyed by fire on 19 April 1998, the hike up to the viewpoint is still worth a visit once in a lifetime.
